I had mentioned Muay Thai to you probably well over a year ago. Curious where you decided to learn; Chiang Mai or Bangkok? We live in CM most of the year and have a couple of newly remodeled apartments (within walking distance to several Muay Thai gyms) if you need a place to rent short term.

Oh wow, I appreciate your offer. The Muay Thai school I’ll be training at in Chiang Mai offers room and board, so I’ll be set on that front. Seriously do appreciate that.

I chose Chiang Mai because I prefer mountains to the beach. Plus, it seems like there’s a few higher rated Muay Thai schools in the Chiang Mai area.

No problem. Hope you enjoy your time there. I have followed your postings/blog for quite a while now. You are doing the kind of things I would hope my grandkids would undertake to round out their lives (but plenty of time for that as the oldest is only 9). I also follow your Dad and Doug Casey.

We (wife and I) have lived at least half the year in CM since 2010; been coming to Thailand since we married in 1977 (49 years next January!). Would be happy to grab a coffee or a beer with you if time allows. Perhaps can share what we know about little-visited places, Thai culture, fav restaurants, Buddhism, neighboring countries…or whatever. All the best to you and good luck in your future endeavors.

Listening to Doug Casey on the virtues of Uruguay, Argentina and Chile led me to go over the thoughts running through my mind after my 2006 split with a woke family. Costa Rican and Argentine women have their attractions, but they are different. Having been married to a Vietnamese and a half-Japanese, I did not want different again!

Women here are culturally European. But traditional European. Hard to believe, but I have far more in common with my 37-year-younger Ukrainian wife than either of the others. She wanted to be a mother, and is a good one.

Doug would rule out Ukraine because there is too much lead in the air at the moment. Definitely a consideration, though we are not scared. What is good about it is no diversity, no GLBTxyz, reasonable prices, and the very high level of common civility that comes with us being all one people. I expect (optimist, yes) that the war will wind down within a year. Time to add it to the list of prospective destinatioins.

I have no entree to propose directly that Doug add it to his list, but if you could mention it, I'm easy to find on the Internet if he would like to discuss it.

Down with a cold has given me time to reread The Preparation and start a review. What did I do wrong? Followed your advice! Overexerted myself, taking my almost 5-year-old four miles home from kindergarten in a child seat, then ferrying my 8-year-old (b'day today) home on the baggage rack of another bike. Too much for a guy four years older than Doug Casey!

The Preparation is a bit ambitious. I learned Portuguese in four months only because I already spoke French and Spanish. Russian took a year, and Ukrainian is still not there. Language is hard! Ditto chess, poker, bridge and other stuff. Worth doing, but one's ambitions must be realistic.

Two things Ukraine knows about are drones and agriculture. Eddie and I will be following your work with interest.
