Well, I don’t know what to say…

So much yet so little has happen since I last spoke to you almost 4 weeks ago. I didn’t mean to go so long without posting an update either, but if you can believe it things have managed to get even crazier recently. Let me list off everything that has happened in the last 2 months and then I’ll fill in the details about what’s happened recently:

• Travelled from Uruguay to Japan, stayed in Japan for 3 weeks, then travelled to Thailand to train Muay Thai

• Scratched by a dog in Thailand which led to me getting 4/5 rabies shots over the course of several weeks

• Chest pain, tightness, and crazy hypertension 24-36 hours after the first 3 shots

• Got sick twice in 3 weeks in Thailand

• Picked up a fungal infection in sparring that I falsely assumed was staph

• Went back to Japan

• Took Dicloxacillin for what I thought was staph, found out it wasn’t, then treated the fungal infection with a topical cream

• Decided to start training Muay Thai again in Japan, got strange cuts on my arm after the second session, cuts turned into boils and spread everywhere

• Went to the doctor who falsely diagnosed it as dermatitis or psoriasis

• Went to another doctor who diagnosed it as staph and prescribed Cefalexin

• Started taking the antibiotics and feeling lots of strange effects

• Flew 10 hours back to Denver from Tokyo

• Got up the next day and drove 4 1/2 hours to Grand Junction, Colorado with very little sleep to attended a conference

• Woke up feeling bad — super shaky, anxious, and hot

• Went to the hospital to get blood tests, nothing showed up, but found out I have an oral yeast infection from taking antibiotics

• Decided to not go to conference or rope rescue course in Utah

• Felt a crazy tightness in my throat for an entire day

• Drove 15 hours from Colorado to Iowa

• Felt very weak, poor circulation, headaches lasting for days

• Feeling better now after March 28th

And that’s about it thus far…

My unwillingness to allow extra time to rest certainly has made it worse. I never should have trained again in Japan because that created a whole slew of other issues to deal with, but I assumed that it wasn’t a problem at the time. In retrospect I was pushing the limit to try to salvage the rest of the cycle since I’d only spent 3 weeks training in Thailand instead of the intended 6 weeks…and I didn’t fight like I wanted to.

At this point I’m certain that it’s the antibiotics that have caused much of my suffering over the last couples weeks. My brain has definitely been affected. Those close to me know that I’m not the most positive person in the world. The destruction of my gut microbiome lowers serotonin and dopamine levels, which has increased overall negative feeling and definitely heightened anxiety. I’m not someone who goes around saying I have anxiety. I don’t and I’m not one of those people. Feeling anxious can be great at a certain level because it makes you want to get up and do stuff. Over the last 2.5 years I tend to wake up with at least a low level of anxiety in the morning due to the fact that there’s often quite a lot that I want to get done in a short amount of time.

Anxiety stemming from wanting to do what you need to do is good, but what I’ve felt recently is way over the top.

Anyway…

These last couple weeks have been the worst part of the last two months. I’ve never felt anything like it. My current conclusion is that the combination of all the travel, medications, changes of environment, hard training in Thailand, infections, and poor sleep have led to my nervous system going haywire. Too much going on in too short a time.

Recent symptoms which have brought me to this conclusion: poor circulation, muscle weakness, band-like headaches that last 12+ hours that also cover the neck, poor cognitive function…

As I write this I’m feeling much better. I’m staying with family in Illinois and getting plenty of rest. The only thing I need to do differently is eat better food to get my gut back on track, but that’s easier said than done when so many of the nasty fast food staples haven’t been available to you in quite a while. With some more rest, good food, and very little stress I’ll feel better in no time. I want to get back on track ASAP because although I’ve had plenty new experiences this year I want to be more productive again.

Asia for 3 Months

We left Tokyo on March 18th after spending our final week in Japan with a friend we had met at a conference my family hosted in Uruguay last year. Not much to say about that except that it was good to see him again. He’s a good friend — very positive, extroverted, and smart. We took showed him around parts of Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo.

Overall, I think he enjoyed the experience, but he was much less impressed with Japan than I was when I first got there. This is probably because he’s lived in Asia for much of his life.

My view of Japan was beginning to fade around the time he arrived, so my negative thoughts about the place might have swayed his opinion slightly. My default is to spot all of the negative things about a place or people — and I’m very good at it. Once the initial wonder of being in Japan had faded (after 5 1/2 weeks) there was a shocking contrast to what I saw around me.

I won’t speak about it because I don’t want to dissuade people from going there. In truth, all places are the same after you're there long enough. I’ve seen parts Africa, much of North and South America, some of Asia, and a strange set of islands in the South Atlantic. There are large cultural differences, lots of different languages and customs, but people are largely the same at their core. Some better than others, a few extraordinary ones, and a ton of crap.

Don’t get me wrong, travel is good. Travel with purpose is the best.

If you go somewhere new with the intention of learning something specific you’ll meet some of the best people, walk away with interesting stories, and truly gain something from the experience. Travel without purpose — tourism — is cancerous. It’s destroyed Thailand, Japan, parts of South America, much of Europe. Travel with purpose gets you working right alongside locals and learning from them. Respect is earned that way.

So, that’s a long way of saying: Don’t travel aimlessly. Don’t believe that travel will allow you to “find yourself”. Find the best of a country or people by putting yourself in the position of a student.

Anyway…

Spending 3 month in Asia turned out to be a very different experience than I thought it would be, but I don’t regret it. The events of the last couple months were proof of something I’ve thought to be true, but I wasn’t certain until I saw it firsthand. You see, one of the things I love most about The Preparation is that it’s difficult and occasionally dangerous. Oftentimes I’ve heard people wish me “good luck with your adventures” with a very lighthearted emphasis on the word Adventure. Sometimes it is said in a demeaning tone, but more often than not it’s said with total sincerity. The funny thing is that adventure comes from a difficult, and sometimes dark, set of circumstances that are incredibly challenging and sometimes painful.

Adventure is best enjoyed in a chair with a coffee and a book. Louis L’Amour said it best:

“Adventure is just a romantic name for trouble. It sounds swell when you write about it, but it’s hell when you meet it face to face in a dark and lonely place.”

As I said, I had an inkling that adventure isn’t what most people think it is after doing a number of “adventurous” things over the past couple years that didn’t seem so glamorous when you were in the middle of it. It wasn’t until Thailand — and the events that ensued — that Louis’ quote finally came true for me. Bacterial infections, fungal infections, dog scratches, rabies shots, and sicknesses — a set of completely unexpected events after diving head-first into the romantic idea of training Muay Thai in its birthplace.

Now that’s adventure. I wouldn’t change a thing.

You’ll have plenty of adventures in The Preparation. Don’t let these past two months of weird issues I’ve had turn you away from doing new things in strange places.

Changes

“If you could use one word to summarize what you think your time in Thailand will be like, what would it be?”

“Meditative”, I said.

In retrospect, that was by far the funniest thing I could have said after taking into account what actually happened. Though, at the same time, it was the most true thing I could have said. My time in Thailand wasn’t peaceful and calm as I thought it would be, but the difficulties that came out of it set the stage to allow me to make it a meditative experience.

I must confess that it wasn’t until very recently that I took advantage of the situation to actually meditate on the experience.

It was 2am. I had been feeling pretty rough since getting back to the states, but now we were making the 15 hour drive from Grand Junction, Colorado to Iowa where my family is. I couldn’t stop thinking about how bad I’d been feeling, was feeling, and would probably feel after this long drive. So much had happened in the last couple months and, to make things even more angering, I had been so unproductive. Then a switch flipped again and I realized once more that everything happens as it’s supposed to happen, all that matters is that I do the right thing regardless of the circumstances. The thought of what Socrates or Marcus Aurelius would have done in my situation made this clear. No matter what, they would have acted like men. They would do what needed to be done, rested if necessary, and would have continued to do, say, and think the right thing.

I’ve said it before, but I’m often painfully reminded of it again and again: You can throw all of the skills, experiences, money, and interesting stories out the door — all that really matters is the kind of man you are.

Sometimes the endless pursuit of skills — or any other external thing for that matter — can throw you off course if you don’t frequently reflect on what actually matters.

That same night that I was driving I thought back to the story of the Count of Monte Cristo. 14 years of his life were taken away after being falsely imprisoned and betrayed. The first six years were full of endless pain and hopelessness to the point that he no longer believed there was any higher good in the world. Something changed (I won’t spoil it) in those final eight years that led to him becoming an extremely impressive man. He learned and improved continuously while still being confided to the dark and dingy cell that he thought he might die in.

That story is always beautiful to me because, although it is fiction, it showed what a man can do even in seemingly hopeless circumstances. Edmond Dantes (the main character) didn’t worry about the passage of time or external circumstances — he did what he believed he needed to do regardless.

(Of course, he was motivated by the bad external circumstances he faced, but I’m only talking about those 14 years he was imprisoned…not the rest of the revenge story.)

I am acting as a guinea pig for a program which is meant to prepare young men for the future. This program is designed to be a replacement for the only three routes advertised to young men today - go to college, the military, or a dead-end job.

All of these typical routes of life are designed to shape us into cogs for a wheel that doesn’t serve us. Wasted time, debt, lack of skills, and a soul crushing job define many who follow the traditional route.

This program, which we can call “The Preparation”, is meant to guide young men on a path where they properly utilize their time to gain skills, build relationships, and reach a state of being truly educated. The Preparation is meant to set young men up for success.

What appeals to me about The Preparation is the idea of the type of man I could be. The path to becoming a skilled, dangerous, and competent man is much more clear now. I’ve always been impressed by characters like The Count of Monte Cristo, men who accumulated knowledge and skills over a long period of time and eventually became incredibly capable men.

Young men today do not have a guiding light. We have few mentors and no one to emulate. We have been told that there are only a few paths to success in this world. For intelligent and ambitious people - college is sold to us as the one true path. And yet that path seems completely uncertain today.

We desperately need something real to grab onto. I think this is it.

I’m putting the ideas into action. Will it work? I can’t be sure, but I’m doing my best. I’m more than 60 weeks into the program at this point. So far, so good.

You can follow me along as I follow the program. Each week, I summarize all that I did.

My objective in sharing this is three fold:

1. Documenting my progress holds me accountable.

2. I hope these updates will show other young men that there is another path we can take.

3. For the parents who stumble upon this log, I want to prove to you that telling your children that the conventional path - college, debt, and a job is not the foolproof path you think it is.

Things have been tough…no doubt about that. This past month and a half has been wild, uncertain, and ever-changing. Every move to continue training — not just in Thailand but also now in Osaka — has faced one brick wall or another.

Despite the chaos I’m learning a lesson that I wish I had learned a year ago…

I’ll get into that in the video because it might just keep you from making the same mistakes I’ve made (and continue to make) within this process. The life lessons learned alone are enough to make the past 2.5 years of difficulty worth it. I suppose it was just time to learn another one of those lessons.

Writing to you from Osaka, Japan

It was time to get things moving again after a couple weeks break from training Muay Thai. The break was needed, no doubt, but it’s time to get back to making progress in order to make the most of the first cycle of The Preparation for this year.

Luckily, a Thai-owned Muay Thai gym is only a 30-minute walk from the place I’m staying. That will make the process of quickly getting back on my feet much better.

After all, time moves very fast. I’m telling you…every time I reflect on the last 2.5 years I see just how quickly it has gone by. With only a year and a half left in the program I can only imagine that it’ll go by in the blink of an eye. Making the most of this period of time is key. Moving fast after a setback is absolutely necessary.

The progress this past week was the first step to moving forward at full speed again.

I was in Chiang Mai, Thailand for 3 week to train Muay Thai…but a few things happened that have caused me to return to Japan for a little while.

Writing to you from Chiang Mai, Thailand

Today marks two weeks since I arrived in Chiang Mai to train Muay Thai as part of the Fighter Cycle from The Preparation. Some days go by fast, some go by slow, but overall it feels as though I’ve already been here for months.

Analyzing the whole experience thus far (which is easy to constantly do when going back and forth from training to sitting in a small room) has brought me to the very solid conclusion that this time here, more than anything, is much more mentally difficult than physically difficult.

Let me explain…

You can drag your body along to do things even when you’re tired, sore, and fatigued. It sucks, no doubt, but it can be done.

The most difficult thing is training hard, leaving the gym, and coming back to consciousness about the situation you’ve put yourself in. You’re surrounded by unfamiliarity, swarmed with discomfort, and all your mind continues to do is ask you again and again, “How many days are left?”

I have 27 more days here — that realization was one of the first things that came to mind when I woke up.

The reason why this is as mentally difficult for me as it is is because I’m counting down the days until I see my fiancée again. Every time I think about how much more time needs to pass I feel my face heat up and the pit in my stomach grow heavier. This feeling looms in the background all day every day and only disappears during brief moments of focus on training — or as I’ve been doing a lot of recently — writing.

What to do?

I’ve felt this feeling in the past, probably seven or eight times, but it never gets easier.

How many times have I left do go and pursue something new? I couldn’t count at this point. I was away from her when I learned the foundations of mule packing in Colorado, when I went to work on wildfires in Oregon, when I was learning to fly Cessnas in the states, when I was working on the ranch in Uruguay, when I worked on a geophysics crew in Nevada, when I learned to sail in the Falkland Islands, when I went to a rope rescue course in South Dakota…

Months and months without her throughout our relationship hasn’t made things easier over time in the slightest. It’s only gotten harder.

For some reason, I assumed that my mental ability to not feel the pain (or even dampen it) would have hardened — allowing these times away to be easier.

I suppose it’s a good sign for our relationship that it isn’t easy!

Anyway…

I’m not telling you this to whine, only to write about how things actually are here, that way you can better understand the difficulties you may also experience if you take this path. The Preparation has completely changed my life for the better. Yet, due to the fact that you are engaging with life head-on, again and again, there are many forms of temporary suffering that come with it.

Last note about this: Reflecting back on the past 2 and a half years…the times of progress that were accompanied by suffering were some of the most beautiful.

Moving on…

What to do about this great mental challenge?

I spoke to my father this past week about these mental difficulties that were starting to bubble to the surface yet again. He, as a man who’s always in my corner and absolutely the best man I know, offered a temporary aid for the remaining days I’m here. But, that wasn’t until after he told me about the training he underwent after he signed up for the army many years ago.

There were eight weeks of basic training. All of which, as he said, were hell. Every moment of every day sucks. As he said, “The army has a great way of making the most awesome things suck”. It was constant suffering made worse by the fact that you could only make one call home each week…with no guarantee that the people you love would be home to pick up the phone.

8 weeks of suck.

On top of that, he (after a short break) went off to spend another 8 weeks in Advanced Training after that.

While he was telling me this I was comparing my current situation to the one he faced quite a long time ago. He had 8 weeks of Basic Training to get through…I only have 6 total weeks to get through. He had no agency over his own time…I can choose when and how I want to train, as well as how I’d like to spend the remainder of the day. He could make one call a week to the people he loved…I can be in contact with everyone I love at nearly any time during the day.

Comparison after comparison was passing through my mind and I only began to realize more and more just how much easier I have it.

“All I did to combat the suffering was write. I’d carry around these small notebooks in my breast pocket and write about what was happening any time I had a free moment. To this day I wish I had those notebooks…I’d pay one million dollars if I could get them back”, he then told me.

Writing eased the pain of the moment by causing him to view his situation from “30,000 feet”. All of the pain was transmuted into the writing — at least that’s how he described it to me.

So, his temporary solution for me: Write everyday.

Since our conversation I’ve been writing frequently and will continue to do so for the rest of my time here. I have to say…it’s been hugely helpful for me in terms of viewing the bigger picture and taking things day by day.

Training

Training has been going alright. Monday was the best day by far because I told one of the coaches that I want to fight by the end of February. All of a sudden, he brought a young Thai boy over to punch me repeatedly in the stomach after I’d finish a round on the pads. Then — and I swear they came out of nowhere — 2 or 3 other Thai boys appeared. The guy holding the pads said something to them that I didn’t understand and then told me to hold my hands above my head.

The Thai boys (one on either side of me) started throwing leg kicks to my stomach until I backed away from the pain.

It made me smile.

Other than that I’ve been feeling as though I’m just going through several intense workouts each week and not learning very much. Today I realized that I really only have 3 weeks to prepare for a fight. So, I have to figure out how to learn and improve as much as possible within that timeframe.

I have to train harder.

First Experience

This past week I went to watch Muay Thai fights for the first time.

It shifted my attitude toward my time here because up until then I had only seen what the training looked like. Now, with the ring in front of me, loud music, bright lights, crowds, and people getting hurt I realized what I’m training for.

As a side note, I made a friend here who happens to be a very good guy. He’s also seriously dedicated to training and the art of Muay Thai as a whole. He fought that night and gave me the privilege to film it for him. He went up against a Japanese kickboxer who was a very hard puncher.

In the end, after a flurry of knees and elbows, my friend split his face open and seemed to break his arm in the final round.

The winner was obvious.

Stunned, he climbed out of the ring and walked to a back room where the fighters prepared for their fights. He has given everything he had to the point that he threw up from exhaustion.

To put it plainly, I was impressed.

Although he is a much better fighter than I am, I intend to win my fight in a similar fashion: all out war.

Perhaps I’ll talk about this experience in the future. I’ll see at least a few more fights before I leave and, as I said, participate in one as well. It’s a wild experience and very difficult to describe the atmosphere in an intelligent manner, but I’ll try.

Writing to you from Chiang Mai, Thailand

I’ve climbed 14,000ft mountains, spent long days in the hot Nevada desert, worked cattle on horseback, and sailed through the South Atlantic — but none of those things come close to the physical intensity of training Muay Thai.

Now let me be clear…

The point is not to come here to mess around in a unique place, buy cheap stuff, train a little, and walk away with Muay Thai shorts to show off.

My intention is to become a competent fighter — not to build mastery or gain exceptional fighting ability — but to reach a foundational level of competency which would make me far more physically dangerous than the average person. In addition to that, I am training to (hopefully) fight in the ring before I leave Thailand.

All of this is for the Fighter Cycle of The Preparation.

The First Week

Back in December I said that I was preparing to come train in Thailand by hitting the bag for a few rounds and running a little…

As I write this I’m literally laughing at myself for thinking that would help me get in better shape for the training. I completely underestimated this. Each day of training is always different, but usually it’s a combination of jump rope/warm up, sparring, pad work, bag work, pushups, sit ups. It might not sound too bad, but keep in mind that a combination of all of these things is going on for 2 hours straight and few short breaks in between.

Mindless movement during any part of those 2 hours is frowned upon.

Each and every thing you do should be intentional no matter how tired or out of breath you are. You keep going through it all. And, if you do all of this consistently you’d be (as the Thai’s would say) “showing heart”. That is the most important thing to them.

Anyway…

The first few session were rough for me…enough to put me out of commission last Wednesday. I picked training back up on Thursday, but managed to get some minor scratches from a street dog on Friday and had to go to the hospital for the 1st of 5 rabies shots, which meant I missed my classes that day. Then, I went back for training on Saturday evening to finish off the week’s training.

All in all, I trained for a total of 10 hours last week.

My legs and arms are bruised, but I’m happy to see it.

The Hardest Part

Despite the fact that the training is wildly difficult it isn’t the hardest part of this experience.

When it comes to all of the Cycles of The Preparation that require you to envelope yourself in both a new pursuit and a new environment the most difficult part is that there is likely nothing familiar around you. Until you actually take a few days to dive head first into whatever you’re learning you’re going to feel like the walls are closing in on you whenever there’s a second for your mind to wander.

Oftentimes you’ll hear a voice in your head saying, “You don’t really have to be here. You can just leave if you don’t like it.”

Your family, friends, people you love, things you know and are familiar with — they aren’t with you. You have thrown yourself into the fray and the fight is to find enough meaning and fulfillment within your current pursuit that the fears and anxieties can be handled.

I miss my fiancée like crazy. I think about her every time my mind has a moment to wander…every time I’m not directly focused on something. The thought of seeing her (right now) makes me want to pack my bags and get on the next flight to see her. She is, to my unending delight, one of the things that makes it so hard to be away, in a strange place, doing something entirely new, all alone.

You probably have someone or something that’ll cause you pain to be away from it.

Good.

You have something good to come back to as a better man, a smarter man, a more physically capable man, a more virtuous man. So, take any pain or discomfort from these experiences and use them as fuel to do what you came to do.

As Wesley from The Princess Bride said, “Life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.”

But, don’t let that great quote from a great movie bring you down. If you align with the view of the Stoic’s you’ll know that God sets difficulties before a man worthy of surmounting them. There isn’t a difficulty that life presents to you that isn’t meant for you to endure.

So focus on the task ahead of you and keep moving.

Academics and Activities

I just finished the Understanding the Human Body anatomy course by the Great Courses. Not easy to get through as there were 32 detailed lectures about the human body, but I certainly did learn a few things from it.

In addition to that I did 6 total hours of chess practice and learned a few basic Thai phrases.

Reading

• Finished reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu

• Started reading Fate is the Hunter by Ernest Gann

I’m only about 45 pages into this book about the wild stories from pilots and co-pilots in the days of early commercial aviation, but it is very entertaining.

• Started reading The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman

This program, which we can call “The Preparation”, is meant to guide young men on a path where they properly utilize their time to gain skills, build relationships, and reach a state of being truly educated. The Preparation is meant to set young men up for success.

What appeals to me about The Preparation is the idea of the type of man I could be. The path to becoming a skilled, dangerous, and competent man is much more clear now. I’ve always been impressed by characters like The Count of Monte Cristo, men who accumulated knowledge and skills over a long period of time and eventually became incredibly capable men.

Young men today do not have a guiding light. We have few mentors and no one to emulate. We have been told that there are only a few paths to success in this world. For intelligent and ambitious people - college is sold to us as the one true path. And yet that path seems completely uncertain today.

We desperately need something real to grab onto. I think this is it.

I’m putting the ideas into action. Will it work? I can’t be sure, but I’m doing my best. I’m more than 60 weeks into the program at this point. So far, so good.

You can follow me along as I follow the program. Each week, I summarize all that I did.

My objective in sharing this is three fold:

1. Documenting my progress holds me accountable.

2. I hope these updates will show other young men that there is another path we can take.

3. For the parents who stumble upon this log, I want to prove to you that telling your children that the conventional path - college, debt, and a job is not the foolproof path you think it is.

Writing to you from Chiang Mai, Thailand

I fell off the map for a few weeks…

It seemed like every time I tried to write a weekly update from Japan there was something planned or better things to be doing — usually it was both. After missing two weekly updates I figured that I might as well wait until the trip is over to release an update that covers all 3 weeks. Time was best spent being there instead of writing about it.

Now that I’ll have a strict schedule training Muay Thai here in Thailand I can tell you all about the trip, as well as what the rest of this Cycle will look like.

Stepping into a New World

My fiancée kept joking about how I’d say “Can you believe we are in Japan?” every 30 minutes at the beginning of our trip. I couldn’t help but say it. Everything was different — the culture, the people, architecture, customs, food. Not only was it different, but it was admirable.

For the first time in God knows how long I was truly impressed with a place.

I think that those who go to Japan with the right mental framework feel an almost gravitational pull to fit in with the culture as much as possible, to be respectful at all times, and to try hard not to disturb the surrounding ecosystem. Of course, the few who try to do it right get crushed by the overwhelming majority of typical tourists (who certainly taint the view of all foreigners) but I’ll get into that later…

Anyway, besides the exception of the strange anime bar we happened to stumble into everything was very pretty, clean, and surprising. We hardly saw a piece of garbage, the were people respectful, the architecture and subway stations were often elegant and enjoyable to be in and around. It was the first time in nearly a decade that I had been pleasantly surprised by a culture and, not to mention, a city. Tokyo was my favorite part of the trip.

Walking.

We must have hit around 65,000 steps while in Tokyo. Usually we were walking aimlessly to get as much of a feel for the city as possible — seeing Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, one Catholic church, a few parks, and impressive subway stations.

Our goal was to observe.

My personal goal was to have a solid understanding of many of the basic cultural practices (i.e. gestures, language, behavior). My fiancée, being half Japanese, cut the learning time down to about half because I could ask her question after question about Japan. It was nice not having to figure some of those things out on my own.

We spent a lot of time talking about the culture and any time I observed somebody doing something I didn’t understand (example: bowing before entering through a Torii) I could ask her and she’d tell me all about it…or used Google for support when needed.

Noticeable Differences

Of course, I wasn’t only shocked by the beautiful temples and other aspects of the environment, but I was also intrigued by the cultural norms.

Let me list off a few:

• Wash your hands before entering a temple (wash each hand individually)

• Bow, clap twice, and bow again when standing in front of the temple

• Talking about death, politics, worldly events, and other contentious things is seen as off-limits (sometimes even among friends and family)

• Take shoes off and wipe any wet umbrellas before entering a home or hotel in order to preserve the cleanliness of the room

• There is a clear hierarchy of status and age. Those of lower status (an office worker for example) or of lower age (a son or nephew) are expected to show very obvious signs of respect — bowing lower, showing gratitude, giving up seats on the train or bus…

• Don’t stare

• Talk quietly

• Don’t take phone calls in close quarters (bus, train, etc.)

We saw every one of these cultural norms in practice over the course of the trip, but what was even more interesting were the many chances we had to directly interact with locals, family, and friends.

The Locals

When was the last time you ran into someone who seemed like they actually gave a damn about their job?

Before going to Japan I could hardly recall the last time I ran into a stranger that really did care about the work they did. I’m not talking about someone who’s passionate about their non-profit work and desperately trying to save the polar bears from melting icecaps. No, I’m talking about someone who enjoys the effort of good form and function in their work.

Perhaps that quality really is so deeply ingrained in the Japanese people.

Let me tell you…on one of our first days in Japan we walked into a convenience store, grabbed coffee and snacks, set them down on the counter, and watched as the worker was rushing to make sure we got the receipt and bag of snacks as soon as possible. It sounds funny, but he did it with speed and intention.

On the way out the doors we looked at one another and said, “Dang, that guy was on it.”

Later on, while we were in Osaka, my fiancée’s aunt brought us (very graciously) to a five star restaurant in a luxury hotel. It was unnecessary, but greatly appreciated. In Japanese fashion she wanted to show us the best — putting lots of time and effort into making our time together in Japan as best as it could be.

Anyway, at the hotel we were seated in a line in front of the chef who was going to be cooking several courses for us. All the while, the waiters were constantly keeping an eye out for any empty glass, any potential needs, or any dishes that needed to be taken away. The chef cooked several fantastic courses (including Kobe beef) quickly while also occasionally keeping us entertained with conversation. And, on the way out, the chef and hotel staff walked us to our elevator, bowing and thanking us continuously until the doors closed.

As another example we watched a rope rescue demonstration at a fire department with some friends. In the video below you can see the display of great technique and good rope skills.

From the top down — convenience store worker, Michelin star chef, CEO, or garbage man — they (generally) show conscious effort, intention, and gratitude. Not through words, but action.

Family and Friends

I had never met my fiancée’s Japanese friends and family until this trip. To be more specific, I hadn’t met her aunt, grandfather, or her family friends. In the past two years I had heard a lot about them all, but to see people in the flesh is a whole other thing.

There’s no need to go in detail about it all, but it’s worth going over the incredibly warm welcome I received (and the warm ‘welcome back’ my fiancée received) upon seeing them.

Both family and friends met us at places that were convenient for us. They showed us around. Took us around to eat good food…at one point they even ordered from 4 or 5 different restaurants to make sure we could eat all of our favorite Japanese food. They asked us question after question and were very interested in our responses. They gave us money as a gift for our engagement.

They went over the top. I can’t say for sure that I’ve every experienced that from anyone I had just met.

It was yet another testament to the culture.

New Experiences

Both of us had lots of new experiences on this trip, but two stand out.

Due to my fiancée’s great planning we headed into the mountains of Nagano, Japan to try something she had never done before. She was happy and excited (as she usually is) but she was a little nervous to try this out…especially once we were staring up the from the bottom of a ski hill.

I can’t remember exactly what she said, but it was something like, “Oh boy.”

She booked a coach for a 2-hour lesson, which was a good call. It made the learning process a whole lot smoother for her and (unfortunately) I don’t think I would have been a good coach for this occasion…

But, she did pretty good for her first time. She’s a fast learner.

I was, and still am, impressed with how she did. I haven’t asked, but I think that she’ll want to do more skiing in the future. We shall see.

On the other end of things, we went to Kaga, Japan to check out an Onsen. Now, if you don’t know about Japanese Onsens let me tell you a little about them: They are hot springs and, per tradition, you are supposed to get completely naked before entering the men-only or women-only pools.

Well, my fiancée was making fun of me for not wanting to get naked in front of a ton of old Japanese men. To be fair I was being a baby about it for a little while. Then I realized that if I didn’t go then I might not ever go.

So I went and guess what?

I was the only one in the Onsen, sitting in a nice outdoor pool, and watching the snow fall in the mountains of Japan.

Yet another small example of why you need to do things that make you uncomfortable.

Rotten

The thing about walking aimlessly around new places is that you get to see everything. The good. The bad. The ugly. Now, let me be clear here…I saw an overwhelming amount of good, but we did see a few noteworthy things.

Get mad at me all you want, but every rude or absolutely suspicious person we saw spoke Spanish, Hindi, or some African language. I’ve gotta say, no matter where you go cultures are being destroyed by people who come from garbage cultures. It’s destroyed Europe and has become an ever-increasing problem in the US.

I’m telling you, every suspicious person we saw were Indian or African. Oftentimes, they would wear hoodies, stand on street corners watching people, and literally walk around like they were trying to do something bad.

So, needless to say, Japan seems to be at the beginning of a potential crisis.

To be frank, they should not allow anybody from Africa or India to enter the country. They (generally) disrupt — and take advantage of — the people and culture.

Every Japanese person I spoke to about the Africans and Indians in the country had nothing good to say about them. They don’t want them there and they have no desire to pander to an ideology that imports low IQ barbarians into their country of general peace and order.

The only question is how far they’ll go to kick out bad actors.

Hopefully they go all the way. Japanese culture isn’t fragile or particularly easy to completely route. However, I just don’t want to see their culture swirl down the drain like so many others. I’ve come to appreciate it. In fact, I appreciate it so much that if they went to the extreme of banning all foreigners from the country (yes, including myself) I’d be happy because I’d know that the good aspects of the culture would be preserved.

Thankful and Moving on

Lets get back to the good stuff.

I have to say that I’m very thankful for my fiancée for more reasons than I can count, but also for planning a great trip. She did it all. All I had to do was be there.

We went there to see family and friends and spend time together in a unique place before parting ways for a short time. She did a great job with it all and I’m more thankful than I can describe.

But, now I’m in Thailand to train Muay Thai for nearly two months to complete the Fighter Cycle of The Preparation. I’ve already completed 2 classes. This is by far the most intense physical training I’ve ever done, but you’ll hear more about that soon. To fill the gaps between training I’ll be taking the required academic courses and doing the required reading as well.

I’ll be leaving in early March.

Writing to you from Uruguay

This post is accounting for the last two weeks.

It’s hard to believe how fast these past two weeks have gone by…and even harder to believe that less than two weeks from now I’ll be writing to you from Japan — 11,610 miles away.

Of course, there’s lots of things to look forward to: Starting the Fighter Cycle, training muay thai in Thailand, starting on a clean slate in the new year, going to Asia for the first time…the list goes on.

To be frank, there hasn’t been very much going on and very little preparation needs to be done from here. Thanks to my fiancée the flights/hotels for Japan are booked, so we are all set to spend a good 3 weeks in Japan. The second trip to Thailand, which I’ll be taking alone, is a bit trickier to prepare for. Not in the sense of logistics, but in physical preparation.

Here’s what I mean:

Back in July of this year I was in Paraguay (the worst country I’ve ever been to) and managed to find a good kickboxing gym just 7 minutes from where we were staying. By then I had only had two or three kickboxing lessons in the past, but wanted to take advantage of all the free time by improving my striking skills.

One hour a day, five days a week.

That’s how much we trained. It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough to wear you out. The training was great though — I saw huge improvements in my punches and overall movement. Terrible hooks I was throwing was fixed and my jabs got a little faster.

Anyway, those two weeks of training showed me that I really need to be prepared for Thailand.

The training at the Muay Thai camp in Chiang Mai consists of two separate training sessions: one 2-hour session in the morning and another 2-hour session in the afternoon…6 days a week. Now that’s tough.

I am stronger than I was back in July, but I’m also carrying more fat and I have lower stamina. The past couple weeks I’ve been training on the punching bag we have here to try to gain back some of that endurance and get a little leaner. The goal is to show up and be able to preform as best as I can — being in better shape will help. And, since I’m only going to be there for about 2 months, I want to make as much progress as possible within that timeframe.

We shall see.

Finishing the Entrepreneur Cycle

The benchmarks of success have been hit: I generated an organic lead through Facebook marketing that led to a sale, completed the required academics, and have nearly finished all of the required reading for the Cycle.

These past two weeks I finished Influence by Robert Cialdini and The Million-Dollar, One Person-Business by Elaine Pofeldt. Both were good books, and now all I have to finish is Good Strategy/Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt. After that, the Cycle is officially completed and over. Crazy how fast it’s gone by.

Oh and one other note on the Cycle…

I mentioned a couple weeks back that I would run one last ad to promote the multispectral mapping services for the agricultural drone business. Well, I created the ad, sent it out to Facebook, and could see pretty early on that there was a lack of interest in the ad. Still unclear whether it was a problem with the ad or a general disinterest in that specific service. Either way, it didn’t seem like it was worth running, so I cut it off quickly.

Making Things a Bit More Pretty

The lighting doesn’t really do it justice, but we finished painting the entire interior of the little house we stay in on the ranch. It’s a brick house that an old employee used to stay in with his family. They didn’t take great care of it during the decade they were employed on this ranch, which was obvious when I first decided to move in.

The walls were painted a strange beige color, mold was growing in some places, and in some areas paint was falling off completely — leaving exposed brick to view.

Just about every inch of this place was dirty.

Honestly, it was a reflection of that old employee and his family — lazy, scheming, and unimpressive. People’s homes (and their physical appearance) do tend to take on the character of the person themself. It’s a fact that isn’t surprising, but always interesting to see in action.

Anyway, slowly but surely we’ve been trying to improve this place for a while. Lots of cleaning, rearranging, decorating, and now painting has created an entirely different atmosphere around here.

Painting isn’t a wildly impressive skill, but it’s one of the many small things that makes a place much better. Overall, the real skills is being able to leave something much better than you found it — to make something beautiful out of nothing.

We aren’t there yet, but it’s coming along.

Good People Are Game Changers

If you’ve been following along for a while you probably know that since August of 2023 (when I first started what’s now known as The Preparation) I’ve been trying to improve my chess skills on and off.

Well, I was getting pretty frustrated after a huge losing streak which nearly made we put off playing chess again for a long time. The problem was obviously me…and that only made me more frustrated. You see, when you truly want to improve in chess any prolonged losing streak seems like a direct reflection of your IQ.

Usually that’s not the issue, but you still feel like an idiot either way.

That’s beside the point…

A good friend of mine who is much smarter, much wiser, much older, and much better than myself wanted to help me out. “I know I can help”, he said to me.

Then, after just one hour of examining one of my past chess games and analyzing it, my desire to play chess and improve was back. My friend had showed me exactly what I was doing wrong, explained tactical errors, and left we with plenty of words of encouragement. Chess is exciting again.

That’s what good people can do.

Reflecting

I know where I went wrong this past year. I’m very aware of my own mistakes.

Of course, a lot of good came out of this past year — sailing in the Falklands, learning to fly a plane, working on a geophysics crew, training BJJ, publishing The Preparation, and starting a business to name a few things…

But, the thing the I remember and reflect on most this year is my major mistake of forgetting what matters most and why.

The sailing course at the beginning of the year was amazing for a number of reasons and it was a big win early on in the year. But, it was quickly followed up with a feeling of emptiness when I headed back to the states to complete flight school and get all of my certifications to work on wildfires again. I still got a decent amount done, but (and I see this clearly in retrospect) there was a building feeling of emptiness and lack of understanding in the background. I could feel it, but couldn’t tell what it was at the time.

After being being offered a unique job working on a geophysics crew in the middle of nowhere in Nevada it got a whole lot worse. It was crappy work around crappy and incompetent people (although the geologists, head geophysicist, and owner of the company are all fantastic guys…it was the crew they put together that sucked).

By then, after hours working in the hot sun and dealing with tons of BS, I felt so detached from my original objectives and drive with The Preparation. That was the tipping point, that was when I wanted to be done with things. So I left.

Yet, of course, that only made it worse in the following months because I regretted making that decision to leave. I lost out on doing a lot of what I planned to do.

It was a major personal failure. Not something I ever want to replicate.

I’m not going to go into the details here, but I now know what caused all of it. I know how and why it happened, and I plan on making sure that it doesn’t come close to that in the future. I’ll go into more depth about this topic soon because I want to make sure that you never have to face the same problem, but for now I’ll leave it here.

This next year will be a great one…the best one thus far. I can feel it.

Writing to you from Uruguay

A few days late on this one…but I wanted to get it out today.

Things have been busy, but not necessarily productive and here’s a few reasons for that, which I’ll get to soon…

Last week I was still running the normal Facebook ads for the agricultural drone business that seemed to be generating a fair amount of leads for a while. Yet, there was a minuscule level of interest last week as compared to the weeks before.

Typically I’d receive one or two messages from people who seemed genuinely interested in the seeding services and 12 or so messages asking for additional information. This last week those numbers shot down to around 5 messages in total.

And one of those messages came from a guy who seemed like he didn’t understand that he had accidentally sent me a message…

Something had changed.

As soon as I thought about it, I realized that the seeding season is largely over. The days are getting too hot to sow seeds anyway, but we’ve clearly made the quick turn into the “in between” phase of seeding seasons. Meaning that there isn’t too much more that I can do within the Entrepreneur Cycle of The Preparation over the last 18 days that I’m here in Uruguay.

I’m pretty lucky for being able to generate one organic lead that led to a sale before the window for seeding closed…

It could have been two sales by now because one man contacted me asking for help in spreading granular fertilizer over his field, but just before it was going to happen he had to go in for emergency surgery. No bueno.

What to do with the extra time?

It’s safe to say that the main pursuit of this cycle is over. There really isn’t much more I can do in terms of seeding/fertilizing with the DJI T40 drone. So, we can take that off the board now, but there is one more thing I’m going to try to offer in hopes that I can make one more sale before heading to Asia after Christmas.

Now, it won’t lead to any substantial amount of money no matter what, but I’m thinking of putting out a social media ad specifically offering to do multispectral mapping/analysis of ranches/farms in the area.

One of the other drones we bought this last summer was the DJI Mavic 3M, which you can use to map properties with the thousands of overhead pictures it takes each flight. The drone has multispectral imaging cameras on it as well that analyze grass/crop density and give you as good of an estimate on grass quality as you can get without doing a soil test.

Here’s a quick video of the drone taking off:

The maps you can create with the multispectral images are fantastic for farmers/ranchers to see exactly where there is low grass density and poor soil quality.

Of course, it doesn’t tell you with 100% certainty what your soil is lacking (phosphorus, nitrogen, or potassium for example) but it can vastly improve your ability to make decisions in terms of how to improve your land.

I think I’ll try to market the mapping services as something to help people get ahead of the game for the next year.

We shall see…

But, along with writing up a new FB ad I’ll be reading the few books I’ve yet to complete for this Cycle. I’m going to finish reading The Million-Dollar, One-Person Business, The 1-Page Marketing Plan, Influence, and Good Strategy/Bad Strategy. If you don’t know, The Preparation book has required reading for each of the 16 Cycles, along with required academic courses as well.

I’ve finished the academic courses, so I only need to finish those four books in 18 days to check all the boxes for this Cycle.

Preparing

This past week has also been about preparing for next year. That meant getting in contact the Muay Thai school in Thailand to make sure everything was still good to go, thinking about which Cycles I’ll be doing after the Fighter Cycle, and preparing to go to Japan a few weeks before Thailand.

I started drafting a list of goals for this upcoming year as well.

Proposing

One of the reasons this update was so late is because I proposed to my girlfriend at the beginning of this week. It may seem surprising, and that’s probably just because I don’t talk about it because there’s no real reason to, but I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time.

She said no…

Just kidding. But, that was a major event this past week so I figured I’d mention it despite the fact that it has nothing to do with The Preparation.

Anyway, as the year is coming to an end very soon, things are winding down around here just as they probably are for you. The next few weeks are going to be focused on ending the year well, reflecting on the past year, and preparing for the year to come.

Writing to you from Punta del Este, Uruguay

The week started off pretty well…

I hit the benchmark goal for the Entrepreneur Cycle of The Preparation: generate one organic lead through marketing and convert them into a customer — generating 1 sale. This goes into the topic of the Entrepreneur Cycle itself (which we need to talk about) but I’ll get into that soon…

I generated the lead through Facebook ads a couple weeks back. He first contacted me a month ago and, for a little while, I thought nothing was going to come of the interest he initially showed. Then, all of the sudden, a date was set and I was prepping to head out to his property.

It wasn’t a big job by any means, and I now know that I could have charged much more, but it was a great experience. This customer had 4 hectares of tilled land that he wanted to seed with Sudan grass — 25kgs per hectare.

Piece of cake.

The Agras T40 drone can hold up to 50kgs, but I only poured 25kgs in the tank to be 100% sure we were hitting the mark. With only 4 passes with the drone (each pass being less than 6 minutes) we precisely spread 100kgs of seed over 4 hectares. If we’re counting the time it took to switch out batteries and add more seed to the tank, it was probably a 45 minute operation.

It begs the question…who wouldn’t want to get their seeding done in 45 minutes?

But, this customer did have an extra 25kg bag of seed that he wanted to spread. So, after switching a few settings, we distributed the 25kgs equally over the entire 4 hectares — adding another 20-25 minutes to the job, but he needed it done and it was a display of my desire to truly benefit people.

Well, I must have done good work because just one day later this customer called to ask if I could seed another 6-hectare plot of land he had.

Unfortunately, I had to decline because we were leaving the next morning to go celebrate Thanksgiving in Brazil. Yet, after having further communications with him, I have no doubt he will continue to be a customer going into the future…even after having a few poor misunderstandings with him before we actually met.

It’s amazing to see that even a beginner’s understanding of marketing — coupled with a genuine desire to render a service — can do.

Getting the Message Out

Quick update on this.

I created an ad to distribute by hand to farmers/ranchers in my vicinity a couple weeks back.

It’s been tough to figure out where to distribute the letters for my drone business because there are endless variables in terms of farming/ranching operations…number of hectares, number of cattle, whether or not they have a tractor, whether or not they want to seed land…the list goes on and on.

My services fulfill the needs of a very niche set of people around here. So, when I just have to drive around and guess who may need my drone services, I’m taking a shot in the dark with each letter I drop off. Either way it’s a great experience and I dropped off a few letters with my girlfriend and on the bike this past week before going to Brazil.

The Entrepreneur Cycle — Adding Some Detail

The idea of the “Cycle” was a huge breakthrough for us in creating the curriculum for this program. It simplified the complex framework we were trying to convey in early drafts of the book that frankly wouldn’t have been understood by anyone else because we were trying to piece together a loose arrangement of concepts.

Cycles were our “ah-ha” moment.

The theme behind each of the 16 Cycles came quick. We then not only knew how to better explain why and how people should spend 4 years learning new skills but we also created an easy framework to follow. Naturally, entrepreneurship came up and was added to the book as one of the Cycles.

Now that the book is publicly available we see that 1.) we could have done a better job at laying out the benchmarks of success in the Entrepreneur Cycle and 2.) that the Cycle is a popular first pick.

(We highly recommend that you do not start your Preparation with the Entrepreneur Cycle. It’s not a good first pick. Get some other Cycles under your belt first — the Medic, Chef, and Builder Cycles are much better to start with…but that’s a topic for another time)

The Benchmark of Success

Our description of the Entrepreneur Cycle in the book goes something like this (terribly paraphrased): “Come up with a product or service that is relatively easily created/rendered and try to make sales within the 3-month Cycle.”

We should have said something like this instead:

• Come up with a service you can render or a product (that you can easily create within 3 months) that you will try to sell

• Go through the process of setting up a company (sole proprietorship or LLC)

• Create a marketing campaign for your product or service to generate leads (do market research, competition analysis, copywriting, figure out how to run ads on social media…)

• Complete the required reading and online courses

• Benchmark of success within the Cycle: Generate one lead through marketing which leads to one sale of your product or service

That may sound easy to you, but as an entrepreneur you’re almost completely in the dark about whether your product/service will get any sales until someone actually hands you cash for your efforts. So, it’s entirely possible that you could work for 3 months to start a business and it not lead to a single sale

While one organic sale is the benchmark of success that doesn’t mean that if you’re unsuccessful in hitting that mark that it was a waste…You’d still be walking away with real experience, greater knowledge of your product/service, an understanding of how to legally set up a business, and a greater knowledge of all the skills that go into marketing and sales.

Those are skills that’ll take you places if you get good at them…

But, I want to make one thing very clear — and this goes for all of the Cycles — once you hit the 3-month mark (meaning the Cycle should technically be over) you should move on to the next Cycle.

There’s a huge temptation to want to keep doing what you’re doing, to stick with the current Cycle. Don’t give in to that temptation. Move on. Unless you see an overwhelming, obvious benefit to extending the current Cycle, move on.

All of these typical routes of life are designed to shape us into cogs for a wheel that doesn’t serve us. Wasted time, debt, lack of skills, and a soul crushing job define many who follow the traditional route.

This program, which we can call “The Preparation”, is meant to guide young men on a path where they properly utilize their time to gain skills, build relationships, and reach a state of being truly educated. The Preparation is meant to set young men up for success.

What appeals to me about The Preparation is the idea of the type of man I could be. The path to becoming a skilled, dangerous, and competent man is much more clear now. I’ve always been impressed by characters like The Count of Monte Cristo, men who accumulated knowledge and skills over a long period of time and eventually became incredibly capable men.

Young men today do not have a guiding light. We have few mentors and no one to emulate. We have been told that there are only a few paths to success in this world. For intelligent and ambitious people - college is sold to us as the one true path. And yet that path seems completely uncertain today.

We desperately need something real to grab onto. I think this is it.

I’m putting the ideas into action. Will it work? I can’t be sure, but I’m doing my best. I’m more than 60 weeks into the program at this point. So far, so good.

My objective in sharing this is three fold:

Writing to you from Uruguay

“I neither know nor think I know”

-Socrates

It’s very fitting for one of the wisest men to walk the earth to openly say that he, in fact, knows nothing. On the outside looking in, as someone who’s magnitudes more ignorant, Socrates’ statement seems silly.

This is a man who knew how to wrestle, demonstrated unwavering courage as a hoplite in the Peloponnesian War, could strategically pick apart arguments of rhetoricians—men who thought themselves to be persuasion artists (as seen in Plato’s Gorgias)…

Socrates, despite not dedicating himself to many of the common trades, had a greater understanding of the work of a surgeon or stonemason than most others would. He held his own while facing down the wrath of his own people: being put on trial for impiety and corrupting the youth. He stuck to his principles and held to the eternal virtues which guided him despite his defiance leading to his death soon thereafter.

Centuries after Socrates’ death in 399BC, Marcus Aurelius described him as the one true stoic sage—a stoic in perfect form. And, more than 1,500 years later, the impact he had on the greats remained: Ben Franklin would seek to “Imitate Jesus and Socrates” in his list of 13 Virtues.

Still, a man with such gravitas, wisdom, and life experience so as to be regarded in awe by great men thousands of years after his time really did believe he knew nothing.

I think he was hitting on a deep truth in saying that, but we’ll save that for another time.

Shifting the view

What’s important here is an idea intertwined with Socrates’ words: being comfortable looking like a fool. Not just knowing that it’s good to accept it, but truly understanding how little you actually know.

Why?

The man who steps into the cockpit of an airplane for the first time has two choices with two wildly different outcomes. He can portray false competence—lying to himself, disrespecting his instructor, and putting peoples’ lives at risk. Or he can accept full ignorance—opening up an immeasurably positive path…

True competence, a good relationship with those around him, and a strong personal constitution are (and will be) given to him...all from one simple act.

All it takes is a shift in your frame of mind.

This is something I’ve been thinking about recently. Especially after reading Scott Adams’ How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big. Per the title, Scott goes into detail about the many failures in his life, many of which came from ignorance. But, what you’re waiting for on each page is how he utilized those failures to win big…

Well, there’s two ways he did it, but the most important one is the Systems > Goals framework that changed everything for him…

I’ll go into this more soon. So stay tuned…

Systems > Goals

After reading the book this past week I realized something: I’ve focused way too much on hitting goals and checking boxes this year than I did last year…and yet I’ve checked fewer boxes and hit fewer goals.

Funny how that’s worked out…

Thinking back over last year I came to the conclusion that, despite not knowing it, I was doing things right the first time around. Last year I would wake up and think Today is the day.

Today is the day I learn more, do more, and make more progress—moving me closer to where I want to be.

I think it’s fair to say that I’m less ignorant in some ways than I was back then, but man I made insane progress last year, checked a lot of boxes, and got a lot done by having that frame of mind.

I’d say I made more progress last year than I did this year…at least so far.

So, this is to say that the ideas of Socrates coupled with Scott Adams’ Systems > Goals framework is a major wakeup call to me. They remind me about what actually matters and how to think about it. This has been an important realization in the past week.

Going into the rest of the year I’m going to bring back my old ways and do things right.

Putting things together

You may remember that I’ve been putting together a direct mail ad for my agricultural drone business. A while ago I was tasked with doing this for the AWAI copywriting course I took, but I did a poor job of it.

Turns out that having to write persuasively about dog food or flower arrangements for a course in copywriting isn’t all that fun knowing that you have no real potential costumers to send it to…

But, sending your own ad for your own business to people who will either want to shell out cash or never want to hear from you again is fun.

Well, I also told you that I’d give you the opportunity to judge it, so here it is (minus a few personal details):

The ad is finished. Once they are printed in color I’ll be distributing them myself—leaving them on farmer’s/rancher’s gates in my area. It’s a small test, and harder to do without good mailing services, but it’s worthwhile.

The response, if any, will be interesting.

Along with that, I set up another Facebook ad this past week, but I’ll be making a few tweaks to it soon.

Not much to say about this. I’ve gotten in a pretty consistent routine of working out and eating well. It’s definitely improving my mood and energy throughout the day.

Not going well. I need to go back to the basics and focus on the principles.

It’s going alright at the moment, but I want to see if there are any good music theory guitar courses. Do you know of any that you’d recommend?

Writing to you from Uruguay

When was the last time you did something that you genuinely were excited to be doing?

You probably couldn’t describe why it excited you. Whatever it was, it had a hold on you that would’ve been silly to brush off in any logical way. Once you discover the deep desire to do “the thing” it always sticks with you.

For some it’s fishing, drifting, chess, surfing, cross-country motorcycle rides, physics, math, practicing CQB, skydiving…for others it could be gardening, painting, horseback rides…

Anyway…

Everybody seems to have something that really strikes a chord with them — and if they are lucky, and I mean really lucky — they have 2 or 3 pursuits that really get the endorphins flowing.

Well, although I’m not good at it, I’ve really enjoyed writing over the last two years. In particular, I’ve enjoyed continuously learning how to write. I’ve read everything from Hemingway’s blunt (and hard-hitting) works to Gary Halbert’s expert copywriting/direct mail guide he wrote to his son from prison (The Boron Letters for those wondering).

Although those two examples are in wildly different genres, if you’re paying attention, they teach you how to capture attention, hold it, and persuade or envelope the mind of the reader to be fully immersed in the writing and then move toward a certain action.

Reading an expertly-written piece of direct mail can have the same effect on you as one of Louis L’Amour’s westerns…

The direct mail ad prompts you to act — to purchase a product or service. If you finish reading through on of L’Amour’s westerns you may have been so enveloped with the story that you actually find yourself acting (or speaking) as you imagined the main character would.

Both — though worlds apart on the surface — cut to the core of your desire and prompt a subsequent action.

Real-World Testing

What I’m trying to say is that writing is, at it’s core, intertwined across all genres…and that is amazing. If you can do it well it’s a true art form.

Anyway…

I’ve started putting my writing skills to the test in writing a direct mail ad for my agricultural drone business this past week. Now, here in Uruguay we don’t really have addresses or mail services, so distributing the ad will be different than it would be if I tried it in the states.

Once I have the piece completed I’ll print 50 or so copies to leave on farmer’s/rancher’s gates in my vicinity which (I made sure to check) is legal.

Clearly, I won’t be able to get a strong number of leads on this as I would if I could mail out 5,000 ads, but I have one thing on my side: they’ll be going to my neighbors.

In a country that is hugely community-oriented a letter from a neighbor (even a distant neighbor!) will be treated much differently. Plus, the desire to be in good standing — and maybe even friendly — with your neighbors stands firm. I’m only speculating, but I think that even if very few letters lead to sales they will have good long-lasting effects.

Oh and I forgot to mention…Most Uruguayans have probably NEVER received a direct mail ad.

This could be a huge advantage to me or it could backfire. Who knows, maybe it doesn’t jibe well with the culture?

Either way, it’ll be a good test of several things: How successful the business can be, how well I can write persuasively, how relationships could form with neighbors, how beneficial direct marketing is in Uruguay…

I’m still writing the piece, but once I’m finished with it I’ll share it with you.

Seeding and Collecting a Check

Before light rains this past week I did some seeding on our own ranch.

In total, I seeded 8 hectares (19.7 acres) with a mix of white clover and velvet grass, which only took about an hour and a half including the prep work I had to do to inoculate the grass seed.

In addition to the seeding on our ranch I went back to see a rancher who had used my seeding services on her property. The visit was quick though…she was dealing with a cow with mastitis (inflammation of the breast, usually caused by infection) so she handed me $200 for my services and went back to the corral to deal with her cow.

Fun

This past week’s fun was similar to the one previous…more adventure bike riding…but this time it was even more fun. My dad and I went out for a ride together and ended up going down a sketchy trail.

There were stretches of loose rock, boggy patches, and a river to cross near the end.

It was our first river crossing on motorcycles actually. I should have gotten a video of my dad going across as proof that we both made it without a problem, but I guess this video he took of me will have to do:

Lifted weights (5 out of 7 days)

Weight lifting is going pretty good. Definitely getting stronger, but my appetite has also burst through the roof. In the past, for several months at a time, I would eat about a meal and a half (maybe 2 meals a day) and be completely fine. But now…it’s up to 5 or 6 meals a day. But, I’ve got to say, I have much more energy than I used to.

Guitar practice (5 out of 7 days)

Also going well. I’ve been learning more about intervals and scales to gain a foundational understanding in music theory, but it’s obvious that I’m just scratching the surface.

Chess practice (6 out of 7 days)

Chess hasn’t been going great — not paying enough attention to my moves, my pieces in relation to my opponents pieces, and not anticipating attacks.

Reading

• Finished reading Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss

This is one of the best (if not THE best) book I’ve read on sales/negotiation. Granted, I haven’t read many sales books, but this is the first to truly frame the objectives, outline the strategy and tactics, and demonstrate it through key stories in Chris’ life. Chris was an FBI hostage negotiator — the best of the best — and the stories he tells (coupled with his retrospective narration) is key in getting the points across. Highly recommend.

Writing to you from Uruguay

The bittersweet part of doing anything new is that you’re opening yourself up to a new aspect of reality without any ability to gauge your success…at least in the beginning.

You’ve got no clue whether what you’re doing is right or wrong. And, if it is wrong, you have no idea why.

A beginner can (assuming they understand the basic rules) sit down at a chess board and, with enough time, learn some of what works and what doesn’t. Yet, he will undoubtedly hit a plateau. He isn’t making progress and he doesn’t know why. How he’s going to move forward is just as unclear…

I haven’t felt more like a complete beginner than I have in the last month. When the money you make (or don’t make) is directly and obviously tied to your own actions it completely changes the game.

There’s so much that goes into entrepreneurship—sales, marketing, accounting, a basic level of knowledge about your product/service…and never having done this before it’s difficult to gauge where I’m at.

Am I not doing enough? If so, what do I need to do more of? How can I fine-tune my effort and where should I put it? So many questions…

But going back to the chess beginner…

When he reaches that plateau—that area of uncertainty and ignorance—the best thing he can do is seek wisdom from the “masters” who’ve broken through countless plateaus. They will label his issues clearly, reorient his strategy, and introduce him to a set of eternally reliable principles.

The beginner goes from feeling like he’s trapped in space—with every direction holding possibilities and uncertainties—to being sucked back down to earth with a map and compass.

I think I’m at the point where it would be well worth it to seek out some entrepreneurial wisdom.

Here I Am

This past week I started experimenting with Facebook ads to promote my agricultural drone business.

So as to be cautious, I set the daily rate relatively low so that I wouldn’t blow through money, but high enough that I’d be able to reach a couple thousand people per day in this specific province of Uruguay. Considering Uruguay has a population of only 3 million people, reaching about 2 thousand a day isn’t bad.

Thus far I have gotten 4 responses, turned away one rancher (who wanted herbicide spraying services, but told him I wasn’t qualified to do that yet), and I have one lead.

We’ll see what happens!

The responses I get are great even if they don’t work out because they allow me to test how well I can interact with potential clients—it’s an art in of itself.

More Testing…Always Testing

In order to get more practice with using the DJI Agras T40 drone for seeding I’ll be spreading a mix of white clover and velvet grass over a few hectares of our property.

Plus, we do need to increase our grass biodiversity and add some legumes to the mix for their nitrogen fixing properties. For not previously being ranchers, we’ve done an alright job of improving this place over the last 4 years, but we’ve shied away from personally doing any seeding or occasional fertilizing until now.

This morning I mixed the inoculant with the white clover to prepare for some seeding.

So, that’ll be getting started in a few hours!

Weekly Fun

I forgot to mention it last week, so I might as well tell you about it now.

As part of my effort to start doing more fun things, my girlfriend and I camped out on a nice part of the property. The moon was out, temperatures just cool enough to keep the bugs at bay, and the crackling of the fire was nice.

Of course, we brought the staple camping food: hot dogs.

But, something was off. I can’t remember ever having hot dogs in Uruguay before, but these ones were not right. Instead of getting that nice crispy char on the outside it would shrink like heated plastic.

Honestly, I really can’t tell if that’s how a real hotdog is supposed to be—and if the ones in the USA are made of fake meat—or if we just got crappy hotdogs.

But, still, I enjoyed it…and I think she did too.

Yesterday’s fun was taking our adventure bike out for a 45 minute ride. Lots of fun.

Thanks to your suggestions I started learning the basics of music theory on guitar. A little bit of effort has gone to understanding melody, rhythm, tempo…but most of my time has been going to learning scales.

1 hour of chess practice (3 out of 7 days)

Halfway through the week I thought I’d bring back the chess practice. I want to keep improving with that.

Weight lifting (5 out of 6 days)

My workouts have been more intense and I’m already seeing some improvements in muscle and strength over the past month. Also I’m getting more protein (and food in general) in, which is good.

Reading

Writing to you from Uruguay

The plan didn’t work.

She was all hyped up about the work I could do for her. I even did a free multispectral mapping of her property to show her just how impressive this technology really is. The drone (Mavic 3M) takes thousands of pictures over a parcel of land using the several multispectral cameras mounted to it. Each camera captures a different wavelength of light.

Grass emits different wavelengths of light depending upon where in its growth cycle it is. And, depending upon the quality of the grass, it holds more or less chlorophyll — which is essential for photosynthesis and is closely tied with nitrogen soil content.

The drone can capture all of this. Giving you insight into the quality of your grass and soil.

When she saw the map (and the further proof of her own good work on her ranch) she was wanting me to use the bigger T40 agricultural drone to seed part of her land.

Now, you’ve gotta understand, this woman is an impressive and highly knowledgable rancher. Someone who’s connected to many others in the Uruguayan agricultural community. She’s wise, stubborn, and detail-oriented — not someone you want to disappoint.

But, she’s also kind and encouraging. In fact, she is the first “customer” for my agricultural drone company.

“How many kilos of seed do you want the drone to spread per hectare?”, I asked.

“Oh let’s do 3 kilos”, she replied back to me.

I had no problem spreading granular phosphorus on our own land, so how hard could this be? The day had come to seed her property and I was ready. We dumped 10 kilos of white clover and 10 kilos of velvet grass into the drone and were getting ready to finish what should have been a quick job.

Before clicking the Start button on the controller screen I saw an option to choose the material spreading type: Granular fertilizer, Rice…and a few other options along with a button to calibrate the hopper to spread a new type of fertilizer/seed.

Well, this is where the first mistake was made…

Instead of doing a quick calibration for the tiny grass seed, I picked the material type closest to the small grain we would be spreading. The drone went up in the air and within 30 seconds there was a problem. It was spreading way too much seed — 10 kilos per hectare instead of 3.

Even after trying to recalibrate the drone midair it was still spreading too much. Soon, the 35 kilos of seed she had for me to spread over 13 hectares were gone after only 3 hectares.

Standing in the field—controller in hand—and not wanting to look up out of embarrassment for my failure was…rough.

I went over to her and immediately apologized, saying that I would buy more seed for her, come back, and finish the job after recalibrating the drone. Thankfully, she made no big deal of it and said that that would work.

Mistake #2

First thing the next morning I headed to an agricultural store closest to us to buy more white clover and velvet grass for the rancher.

The one thing I absolutely had to do was properly calibrate the drone to spread the seeds before going to her ranch the next day. So, with the help of my girlfriend, we moved the drone, poured 20 kilos of seed into it, and started the calibration.

What I didn’t know was that the drone, in order to adjust the flow rate of the hopper, would spray the seed at max speed and volume.

This was the aftermath…

Seed sprayed all over the floor, into my lungs, got stuck in my hair…it was a mess. But, we picked it all up, cleaned the barn, and learned a new lesson. Seems like you never really learn any lesson the easy way.

But, the good news was that the drone was now properly calibrated — meaning that there shouldn’t be any more problems the following day.

To the Finish Line

We met the rancher back at her ranch to finish the seeding. The weather was good, low winds, and the ground was still moist from heavy rains the day before.

For a few minutes we had the mandatory (but good) small talk that gets rid of all formalities and gets down to the real stuff. Somehow we got on the topic of Peru and Machu Picchu, and this is where she told us that her uncle was essentially the scribe for the man who discovered Machu Picchu — Hiram Bingham III.

5 minutes of conversation is all it takes to learn amazing things from someone.

Also, before getting started, my girlfriend and I helped her move her cows. I’m there to provide value, so I figure that the more value I can provide (even in acts unrelated to the main objective) the better.

We unloaded the equipment from the truck and got started from there.

Let me tell you, this was supposed to be a quick job, but we spent an hour figuring out why the drone wasn’t spraying any seed…then spraying too much. We recalibrated the drone weight to see if that would make a difference, adjusted the spreading speed, and kept trying different things until we finally found a solution in adjusting the spread rate to a level we thought might be too much.

But, it ended up working and was spreading at a rate of about 3 kilos/hectare.

In the end we got it done and it was a success.

Yes, there were lots of failures, enough embarrassment, and I took a loss on the job after buying the additional seed to finish the job, but I learned how to do the job much better for clients in the future.

Despite the major defeat in the beginning the rancher seemed impressed.

Before leaving home that day she told me that she put in a good word for me to some of the other ranchers/farmers she’s connected to. It means a lot and it’ll hopefully lead to gaining another customer or two by year’s end.

An Interesting Conversation

At the beginning of this past week I wanted to get some more details about getting into agricultural drone work (figuring out the details and potential pitfalls) from a competitor of mine — another agricultural drone company in Uruguay.

The man I spoke to, named Aaron, picked up the phone and began giving me “advice”.

For an hour and a half he told me every reason why not to go into the agricultural drone business in Uruguay: Uruguayan employees are terrible and screw things up, the drone and all of its parts are very expensive, and (when a part inevitably breaks) it takes months to get parts from suppliers.

Was he saying all of this to scare off competition?

I don’t think so because all of what he said is true. Plus, he told me that their company moved away from offering seeding/fertilizing/spraying services and mainly focuses on selling drones, drone parts, and drone operator classes.

Why?

Because they had too many issues with employees and a lack of parts for expensive drones that eventually do have issues of one kind or another. So, it’s worth taking all of this into account, but it shouldn’t be a disheartening thing.

The only major thing I foresee as being an issue is the lack of drone parts in Uruguay. Sometimes parts have to be frequently replaced. An “out of the blue” part issue could halt all work.

Electives

Lifting weights (5 out of 7 days)

The Entrepreneur Cycle of The Preparation can leave you being pretty sedimentary for long periods of time. I’ve been pushing harder in my workouts to really get the blood flowing and build muscle. It sucks, of course, but anytime I see a little bit of progress I’m motivated to chase after more. A good workout leaves you feeling physically and mentally better — more prepared for the day.

Guitar practice (6 out of 7 days)

Trying to be consistent with this to build finger strength and muscle memory. I’m trying to decide whether to take the route of continuing to learn individual songs or to focus more on learning music theory in relation to the guitar. Perhaps you might know which road is best to take?

• Finished reading Fire in the Tall Grass by L.S. Goozdich

L.S. Goozdich has been a supporter of mine for a little while. He takes huge inspiration from Louis L’Amour and bases many of his novels on characters similar to those of the Sackett family in a series from L’Amour. I recommend his books. In my opinion, they are great for young teenage boys to read since they set an example for the types of men worth emulating.

Just started this book, so I need to formulate my thoughts, but it’s easy to see that this is a must-read for the Entrepreneur Cycle of The Preparation.

I am acting as a guinea pig for a program which is meant to prepare young men for the future. This program is designed to be a replacement for the only three routes advertised to young men today - go to college, the military, or a dead-end job.

All of these typical routes of life are designed to shape us into cogs for a wheel that doesn’t serve us. Wasted time, debt, lack of skills, and a soul crushing job define many who follow the traditional route.

This program, which we can call “The Preparation”, is meant to guide young men on a path where they properly utilize their time to gain skills, build relationships, and reach a state of being truly educated. The Preparation is meant to set young men up for success.

What appeals to me about The Preparation is the idea of the type of man I could be. The path to becoming a skilled, dangerous, and competent man is much more clear now. I’ve always been impressed by characters like The Count of Monte Cristo, men who accumulated knowledge and skills over a long period of time and eventually became incredibly capable men.

Young men today do not have a guiding light. We have few mentors and no one to emulate. We have been told that there are only a few paths to success in this world. For intelligent and ambitious people - college is sold to us as the one true path. And yet that path seems completely uncertain today.

We desperately need something real to grab onto. I think this is it.

I’m putting the ideas into action. Will it work? I can’t be sure, but I’m doing my best. I’m more than 60 weeks into the program at this point. So far, so good.

You can follow me along as I follow the program. Each week, I summarize all that I did.

My objective in sharing this is three fold:

1. Documenting my progress holds me accountable.

2. I hope these updates will show other young men that there is another path we can take.

3. For the parents who stumble upon this log, I want to prove to you that telling your children that the conventional path - college, debt, and a job is not the foolproof path you think it is.

Writing to you from Uruguay

If you would have told me a year and a half ago that I would be spending 4 days at a conference where I would be talking to people for 7+ hours a day…I wouldn’t have believed you.

Back then, the idea of talking to one person was enough to freak me out a little bit. It’s amazing how much can change in so little time if you put in sincere effort towards progress. Because now, in a room full of people, I had zero anxiety—zero. To me, this noticeable change is only further proof that this path works.

But, let me tell you more about what happened in the past week…

This past week my family hosted the Plan B Conference here in Uruguay. We had over 80 attendees fly from all over the world—USA, Australia, Thailand, UK—to see if Uruguay really is a good safe haven in a world that gets crazier by the day.

It was a real family effort but, I have to say, I had the easy job.

My father felt the huge burden of responsibility being the one that brought everyone down here in the first place and being a speaker at the event. My stepmom was the driving force in it all—managing logistics and planning the event. Of course, she needed some assistance, so my girlfriend and sister spent the entire week helping attendees, ushering them from place to place, and entertaining them.

All I had to do—and wanted to do—was sell signed copies of The Preparation and speak to our guests.

This is why you need to talk to people…

You’ve probably heard successful people say something like, “To be successful in the world you have to be great with people.” No, its not about buttering people up, showering them with gifts, or flattering them…it’s about being genuinely interested in them, being a positive force, and a reliable man.

It could be true that all other tangible skills (ex. welding, flying, combat sports…) come second to your ability to interact with people in a generative way.

But, what does that mean exactly?

Well, I’m still trying to figure it out, but I think it’s something like this: Help people where you can or point them to someone who can help them. Be genuinely interested in them and their success. Hold yourself as an equal to others, but also be willing to put yourself below those worth serving and learning from…

The list goes on, but what I’m trying to say is that those who you want to help in life (and those who want to help you) can only be found by getting out into the world—by talking to real people, even if the “point” of talking to them isn’t obvious to you.

I use the word “point” because that’s how I used to think. When you’re a complete fool (I’m only a little less of a fool now) it’s hard not to think, “What’s the point to talking to someone? What am I going to get out of it?”

Well, the person themself is the “point”, but it’s hard to realize the truth of that until you meet really great people.

Anyway…

I had the chance to speak to a lot of good (and interesting) people over the course of the last week. The conversations spanned from talking about family crests with a Brit, hearing about the Australian mining industry from an obviously smart and kind geologist, somewhat contentious conversations about Bitcoin, and (fitting with the main theme of the conference) speaking about current events with just about everyone.

Something that really surprised me was just how many people knew of me at the conference. Many already knew about The Preparation and what I’ve been doing over the past two years. Speaking to those people was great and something came out of it that I didn’t expect: I was offered 3 potential unique opportunities.

One man offered that I visit him in Malta, another said that while I’m in Southeast Asia to train Muay Thai next year we should take a roadtrip, and a very kind couple from Australia offered to give me a job running farm equipment during their harvest season.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, you have no idea what kind of opportunities can come your way if you do something interesting and put yourself out there.

You Should Have Hope for the Future

There are many reasons to be fearful about the future—severe economic issues, cultural clashes, war, surveillance states, capital controls. People justify taking “the black pill” and accept that the world is going down the drain.

Yes, there’s an unbelievable amount of evil in the world—too much to handle if you think about it often. Yet, I think it is wrong to resign yourself to thinking that there’s little worth caring about, or that nihilism is an alright path. It’s not, and there’s plenty worth caring about and putting honest effort toward if you look for it.

I will say that people have very little faith in other people, especially now that we are in (and heading toward) a very difficult time.

As a very judgemental, and sometimes harsh person, I’m saying this right back to myself. And, it’s not right, there’s plenty of reason to have faith is people (as I saw this past week).

Two young men came to the conference. Both have decided to leave college and pursue The Preparation or a path like it. They are both good guys and proof that you should have some faith in people, especially young people. I’m excited to see where they go in the future. Plus, selfishly, I needed some friends who weren’t 20+ years older than me!

I expect that you and I will be hearing from the two of them as they go down their own paths in the future…

Like a Family Reunion

Some people are quite different from the rest. Their lives are wild, their experiences are unmatched, and the breadth and depth of their character cannot be diminished…

That is, without a doubt, Kirk.

I met Kirk and his wife last spring after he somehow found my Substack page, saw that I was trying to improve my horsemanship, and offered that I visit their ranch to learn mule packing in the Colorado Rockies.

He is highly impressive to say the least. Imagine becoming a certified scuba diver at 12 years old, being a professional meat cutter at 16, packing mules, working as ski patrol, starting your own tech and distribution businesses, and leaving to Africa to become a professional hunting guide where you work alongside the Masai tribe to hunt big game…

That’s just to name a few things Kirk has done.

Well, a couple weeks before the conference started, Kirk messaged me to tell me that he was coming down this way to attend the conference. It was great to see him again—someone I look up to and a key aspect to shaping the past two years.

I told Kirk that seeing him and his wife again was like a family reunion to me.

These good people I’ve met along the way (usually much older than myself) completely change the game. Although they are rare, they set an example of what a good man should be like and they’ve made great efforts to aid me. Whether they think so or not, I am indebted to them.

Oh and I almost forgot…Kirk offered that he and I could go on a scuba diving trip sometime in the near future if timing works out. So, I guess that makes 4 potential opportunities that came out of the conference.

A New Goal

Fun is a big part of life..and something I don’t try to have enough of. Frankly, I’ve done a poor job of adding in the “Do Fun Shit” that we talk about in The Preparation into my life. So, I need you to help hold me accountable with something else going into the future. From now on I want to start doing something fun every weekend.

It could be taking a motorcycle trip, camping, horseback riding, rappelling…

Something fun—anything—every weekend.

• Finished reading The Reluctant Entrepreneur by Michael Masterson

Very good book and helpful for building the mental framework for entrepreneurship. I think Michael’s books Great Leads and Ready, Fire, Aim need to be read along with this book. Highly recommend.

Besides being sick these past two weeks have been well.

I’ve been using our agricultural drones to spread fertilizer and map another rancher’s property to assess the grass quality. I started painting my house here on the ranch and, while I was sick, I started reading through a few good books.

How it’s almost October already…I don’t know. Time is moving fast.

There isn’t much to report on this week. The majority of the week was taken up with trying to spread phosphorus with the DJI T40 drone over a part of our land. I must say, the process is surprisingly simple.

The toughest part of the whole job is shoveling the fertilizer into the container on the drone. Unfortunately, it has a max weight capacity of about 46.8kg…so when you’re trying to spread 200 kilograms of phosphorus per hectare it can take quite a long time. Each flight is very fast — 2-3 minutes max, but that means you’re refilling the drone very often.

Not only that, but you have to frequently switch out the batteries which last anywhere from 8-11 minutes depending upon flight speed, weight, and wind.

Truthfully, the DJI T40 isn’t typically meant to spread so much fertilizer. I think the typical job would be anywhere from 50-80 kilograms of fertilizer per hectare—200 is quite a lot. But, it’s doing it!

It is pretty cool to watch it fly while you stand on the side of the field and relax for a few minutes. All you have to do at this point in the process is have a grid mapped out for the drone to fly, fill the fertilizer container, switch out the batteries and keep an eye on the drone. It’s pretty amazing that it requires so little input.

I think anyone who dedicated 5 solid hours to watching videos on the drone could easily operate it — that’s how easy it is.

Now, I will say, I have had a little bit of trouble trying to figure out which settings are best for the fertilizing missions (in terms of spread rate and figuring out how it can run the best grid over a field) but it has been very helpful. This past week was a trial run. I have half the job done in one field and will finish the other half during the beginning of this next week.

In addition to that, the process to get my sole proprietorship business completely started is moving along well. I got word that it is now a registered company, but I will have to go in to open up a bank account soon.

Electives

1 hour of Spanish practice (5 out of 7 days)

Spanish has been going alright as always. I just have to make sure that I’m consistent in my practice. Vocabulary is still weak for me, but sentence structure is not much of a problem. The trouble is…if you don’t know a few words it doesn’t really matter how you structure the sentence!

1 hour of guitar practice (6 out of 7 days)

Nearly every week I’ve been learning something new on the acoustic guitar, but this past week I’ve tried to just be consistent and touch up the smaller mistakes I make. Overall, I think it’s going well.

Worked out (4 out of 7 days)

I haven’t had much energy by the time the end of the day rolls around (which is when I usually lift weights). Don’t have very much energy in the morning either, so I think it’s a problem of getting in enough calories and moving more throughout the day.

• Finished reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

• Continued reading The Lean Startup by Eric Ries

Things I published

It wasn’t an eventful week, but things are moving along with the drone business. The main objective was to finally use the DJI T40 drone and test it out on our own land, which is in dire need (as most land in Uruguay is) of phosphorus. This trial week with the drone has proved that it’s cool, but also very useful.

I expect there will be lots more progress going into October…

Writing to you from Uruguay

I can distinctly remember the first time that I put serious effort to planning ahead.

The end of last year was a pivotal point — not only for myself, but for the creation of The Preparation as well. At the time, I wasn’t sure of what to do next. Studying regenerative agriculture, doing some work on the farm, minor activities, and thinking about the book was where my mind was at. The problem was…I wasn’t planning for the near future.

But, two major solutions came forward.

Matt Bracken (ex-military man, sailor, and author) gave me a suggestion for a new skill I should learn: Sailing. He sent me Pelagic Expeditions’ website and said that I should consider taking one of their courses.

Well, it required lots of planning. I booked a spot on the Competent Crew course several months in advance, planned my flights from Uruguay to Chile to the Falkland Islands (where the course was held), and had to do additional planning to buy all of the gear I needed in Chile.

All of that planning paid off…

Not many people get to dive into the deep end of sailing by sailing in and around the Falkland Islands and through the Strait of Magellan. Sailing at 50 degrees of latitude — known as the “furious fifties” — is not only wild but awesome in the truest sense of the word.

You can read all about that experience HERE. It was one of the strangest things I’ve ever done. But, the sailing trip was a clear indication that I need to be thinking about, and planning for, the future.

Breakthrough

While I was planing the sailing trip, we (my dad and I) were meeting with Doug Casey to discuss how to move forward with writing The Preparation.

At that time the book was lacking a clear and actionable strategy for people to use. We were essentially telling people to “Go out and do some things like this” without giving them a useful and clear guide to do it. Well, a few weeks of frustrating deliberation over the book led to a new and very simple idea which changed the game…

Sixteen, 3-month cycles.

We created a direct path to follow. A cycle not only contained a main event (Anchor course) but also specific Academics, Reading, Activities, and Reflection to complete in that timeframe. From that point on everything became much clearer.

Shoot, it’s been helpful for me. Before the cycles came along I just had to pick some major skill to pursue and go after it without any time limits or clear goals to hit.

I’ve been using the cycle framework to increasingly greater degrees throughout this entire year. Starting with the Sailor Cycle, moving to the Pilot Cycle, and now in the Entrepreneurship Cycle.

But, it gets better…

I’ve used the framework to plan the Fighter Cycle (going to Thailand to train Muay Thai) for the beginning of next year — 4 1/2 months in advance.

What I’m trying to say is: Planning is incredibly important for constant progress.

Planning on a smaller scale

Looking at my list of what I’ve done in the past week, most of the last 7 days have been spent planning. Whether that be scheduling podcasts, communicating with the Muay Thai school, messaging the drone seller, or speaking to another pilot in Uruguay.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve sent so many emails in such a short time period in my entire life. Yet, all of that communication and planning will allow for the future, near and far, to be better than it would be otherwise.

For one, I’ve paid and scheduled the training in Thailand.

Two, I’ve been scheduling different podcasts to further promote our book. Actually, I’ve been communicating with Glenn Beck’s team to make an appearance on his podcast this upcoming Thursday. With his audience of many parents and grandparents, we should be able to get the book into the hands of many more young men. Seriously great news.

Three, I’ve been messaging back and forth with the DJI drone seller here in Uruguay to get our DJI T40 drone to the ranch ASAP. Speaking of, my dad and I picked up the drone, brought it home, and did a quick test flight a couple days ago.

Switching tracks

If you saw my last update you’d probably know that I’m dissatisfied with the flight instruction I’ve gotten from the company in Montevideo. It seems like they are trying to get as much money out of this gringo as they can.

It’s not good to watch money flow out of your bank account while those you are paying aren’t allowing you to progress.

Luckily…with oddly good timing…my family met a man around our ranch who knows a good flight instructor. Long story short, I called the guy to ask if he could be my new instructor. He not only seemed happy to do so, but he also had a good hourly rate and was willing to let me fly out of an airstrip 15 minutes from the ranch.

No more driving 4 hours just to fly for an hour or two?

Sounds great to me.

I still have to get everything sorted out with him, and it probably won’t happen this upcoming week, but I expect I’ll be flying with the new instructor soon.

Something I’ve realized about the flight training industry:

It’s hard to find a good instructor. It’s much harder than it should be because of the system that is used internationally: pay the flight instructor per hour. When you pay people per hour they (especially morally questionable people) are going to put little effort into making good use of that time…or helping you (the student) make serious progress in short time.

Actually, most instructors don’t really care either way. Most people become CFIs (Certified Flight Instructors) to use the certification as a waypoint — an easy way for them to gain hours to advance their career while not paying the full price of having to fly the planes supplied to them. Let me repeat: they want more hours to advance their own careers and they get more hours logged by simply flying with students.

Let me be clear, you definitely can find higher quality flight schools that have high quality instructors.

I’m simply saying this as a warning to you. CFIs (even here in Uruguay) are mostly instructing to (reasonably) move forward in their own careers. If you find a good instructor—great! But, don’t expect it. From my experience you have to take the bull by the horns and independently push for progress.

Electives

1 hour of Spanish practice (4 out of 7 days)

Lack of vocabulary has been a weak point in my Spanish for a while now. I’ve started reading Madrigal’s Magic Key to Spanish to help with that. It’s been pretty helpful thus far!

1 hour of guitar practice (6 out of 7 days)

Basic practice — nothing too special to speak of. It was either last week or the week before when I learned how to play Nutshell by Alice in Chains and I’ve been practicing that for most of the week. Along with that, I’ve been practicing the intro to Nothing Else Matters…it’s getting smoother!

Worked out (4 out of 7 days)

Still working out as always. There’s tons to do which doesn’t allow for very much time to eat. So, it isn’t easy to gain very much muscle or get stronger for that matter. Meal prepping would be a good idea to solve that issue.

I am acting as a guinea pig for a program which is meant to prepare young men for the future. This program is designed to be a replacement for the only three routes advertised to young men today - go to college, the military, or a dead-end job.

All of these typical routes of life are designed to shape us into cogs for a wheel that doesn’t serve us. Wasted time, debt, lack of skills, and a soul crushing job define many who follow the traditional route.

This program, which we can call “The Preparation”, is meant to guide young men on a path where they properly utilize their time to gain skills, build relationships, and reach a state of being truly educated. The Preparation is meant to set young men up for success.

What appeals to me about The Preparation is the idea of the type of man I could be. The path to becoming a skilled, dangerous, and competent man is much more clear now. I’ve always been impressed by characters like The Count of Monte Cristo, men who accumulated knowledge and skills over a long period of time and eventually became incredibly capable men.

Young men today do not have a guiding light. We have few mentors and no one to emulate. We have been told that there are only a few paths to success in this world. For intelligent and ambitious people - college is sold to us as the one true path. And yet that path seems completely uncertain today.

We desperately need something real to grab onto. I think this is it.

I’m putting the ideas into action. Will it work? I can’t be sure, but I’m doing my best. I’m more than 60 weeks into the program at this point. So far, so good.

You can follow me along as I follow the program. Each week, I summarize all that I did.

My objective in sharing this is three fold:

1. Documenting my progress holds me accountable.

2. I hope these updates will show other young men that there is another path we can take.

3. For the parents who stumble upon this log, I want to prove to you that telling your children that the conventional path - college, debt, and a job is not the foolproof path you think it is.

Things have been super busy…flying, research for the drone business, podcasts, guitar, Spanish…

Typically, my weekly updates are not in video format but, frankly, I’ve been tired and my writing would have been poor if I tried to get it done today. So, I thought I’d go ahead and make a video. Writing to you from Uruguay

Not one of the 16 Cycles within The Preparation are easy, but some are easier than others.

I can tell you that 4 months of sitting in a classroom for EMT school was (at least looking back on it) much smoother than learning to sail in the Falkland Islands. Especially after that first night of sea sickness and the unpleasant realization that I’d have to deal with that for the next few weeks.

But, one of the best parts of it all is how dynamic the program is. Each new cycle presents different challenges. I’m getting an even better sense of this after this first week in the Entrepreneurship Cycle.

Of course, you are always responsible for your own success but, in most environments, you can lean heavily on the more experienced people around you to show you the way. They can give you a step-by-step process to hitting certain benchmarks and get you where you need to go.

That’s not exactly the same with the Entrepreneurship Cycle.

Your success (as I’m finding out) is almost 100% on you. Now, this may seem obvious, but it’s hard to get a true sense of things until you’re face-to-face with it. There isn’t a clear path laid out for you when starting a business — you need to clear the brush out of the way and make your own.

Framing the Objective

I’m a quarter of the way through a book that has been helpful in framing my thinking during this new cycle.

You see, for someone who’s never started a business (let alone an agricultural drone business) it’s hard to understand what the objectives should be. That may sound silly — obviously the objective is to sell! But, it isn’t so obvious to someone new to this, and it’s easy to get caught up in focusing on the business name, logo, slogans, or diving head-first into the necessary legal processes. Before reading the book Ready, Fire, Aim that’s where my mind would have automatically gone.

I was thinking, “Okay, how do I set up the business first so that I can start getting costumers?” Now I know that’s the wrong way to think about it.

Instead, I should be thinking, “How do I get more sales?”

With that one simple question I now have the main objective in my mind: to make sales. All else (at least to a degree) come secondary to that. It doesn’t make sense to put most of your efforts to setting up a business if you’re not even sure if someone would want to buy your product or service.

But, there’s another important point of the book that I have to emphasize for myself.

It’s not just about making more sales as your objective, but it’s also about not being “ready” before trying to make sales. This is something I’ve had lingering in the back of my mind, but proved true through this book: you don’t have to have all the answers, a perfect product, or a perfect service before you ever try to get a customer. Not only that, but there’s no way you can have the perfect product/service or all the answers without getting out into the world and battle-testing it.

A product or service can always be improved, but the only way to know how to improve it is by testing it with real people.

I’m very eager to get the DJI T-40 (seeder/fertilizer/sprayer) drone soon so that I can finally start testing it out and try to make sales. Once I have it I’ll be able to “battle-test” the services I seek to offer to other ranchers/farmers in the area.

And, I have lots of questions like: Who would conduct soil analysis — the customer or myself? Which seeds are best to use, and when? Which types of fertilizer do certain grasses need more of? How will I resource seed/fertilizer?

Frankly, too many questions to list here, but I know that many of them will be answered in trying to make a sale.

Of course, I’m doing lots of research now to answer some questions because there’s a lot I don’t know about agriculture. For instance, we have only used seed and fertilizer on our land once since we’ve lived here. I helped out in the operation, but had no clue of how much fertilizer/seed we were using, which kinds, and why.

I have much to learn.

Speeding things up

3 months to start a business and gain one customer might seem difficult, and it probably will be, but entrepreneurs like James Altucher have said recently that it’s an optimal time period to figure out whether or not a business will succeed.

I think that’s true, but it does put the pressure on — good!

Originally, the plan was to register my business as a corporation due to Cretan tax laws which would mean I wouldn’t be taxed by both the U.S. and Uruguay. The problem is, the entire process takes 3 or 4 months. So, that’s out of the picture for now.

Instead, I’ll start the process to register as a sole proprietor this next week — a process that’ll only take a couple weeks. From that I’ll be able to set up a bank account, have a registered business, and hire employees in the future.

But, most importantly, it’ll be done quick.

I can always convert the business to an LLC or corporation later on if it sees success.

But, as Craig Ballantyne (entrepreneur) says, “Success loves speed”. So, I’m taking his advice to get the ball rolling pretty quick here.

Another Survey of the Land

The grass is looking greener as we head into spring. It’s been changing quite fast.

Because of that, I brought out the DJI Mavic 3M drone to do another survey of our land — I wanted to see if the grass is actually improving or if it just looks better.

Despite the fact that the color red usually signals something bad the red areas in the image are areas of higher growth in our pastures. The yellows and greens are either bare soil, sparse grass, or overall low-quality grass.

This map specifically is an NDVI map, which is great at finding thin patches, bare soil…The only problem with this type of map is that improvements in overall biomass and nitrogen aren’t caught by this map. So it certainly has limitations.

When it comes to my business, I’ll be using the NDVI map in conjunction with the NDRE map which is better as tracking and measuring chlorophyll content (and thus nitrogen status since the two are closely linked).

Plus, the NDRE map gives you a better picture of where to add more nitrogen or overseed an area of pasture that needs it.

The two drones (Mavic 3M, T-40) plus the software will be where most of the work is done.

The Mavic 3M takes multispectral images, the software (either DJI Terra or Pix4d Fields) allows you to create a map from the images and select areas deficient in certain nutrients, then the DJI T-40 flies on the map you create to distribute seed or fertilizer.

Keep an eye on the Collapse Life substack because they will be releasing a podcast interview with my dad and I from this past week. In addition to that, Tyler and Brennan from Minuteman EMS (and now The JourneyMan) brought me on the Spiked Out Podcast to talk about The Preparation.

Matt Beaudreau from Apogee Strong brought me on one of his mentor calls with guys ranging from 12-50 years old in order to talk about The Preparation. It was an honor to talk to them. They are great people and they are trying to achieve many of the same goals we are after by educating young men and directing them toward their own path.

It seems out interests align quite a bit.

It was also a great opportunity to speak in front of a group of people — something that I haven’t done a lot of. Despite the fact that I was nervous and my face was bright red for the entire hour I think it went pretty well. The boys on that call had great questions, Matt had great insights and wisdom from his own life experience, and I got to spread the ideas of The Preparation to more young men!

Electives

It isn’t easy to dedicate an hour to learning Spanish every day, but it’ll come in handy very soon during this Entrepreneur Cycle. I’ll likely have to speak to local ranchers/farmers in Spanish. That’ll be the REAL practice.

1 hour of guitar practice (6 out of 7 days)

Practice is going well, I think I’ve got the hang of the intro to Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters. Also, I started learning how to play Iris — a slightly simplified version — but it sounds nearly identical.

Worked out (5 out of 7 days)

There can be lots of sitting around in the Entrepreneur Cycle. It’s good to get up and walk or hike, but also to keep a regular workout schedule. You’ll feel better if you do.

Reading

• Finished reading Ernest Hemingway on Writing

Not realizing that this was just a compilation of Hemingway’s thoughts on writing (not on how to write) I picked it up and read it all the way through. Was it interesting to see what his thoughts were on writing? Sure, but it wasn’t exactly helpful in terms of trying to get tips on writing well.

• Finished reading Great Leads by Michael Masterson

Unlike the book on Hemingway, this book was quite helpful. One of my questions ever since I started writing has been, “How can I write even better?” This book does a great job of answering that because it gives you 6 specific leads to use when aiming to write persuasively. One of the most difficult parts of writing for me has been crafting a good title, subtitle, and the first 100 or so words — that’s basically to say that I’ve always had trouble with crafting a good “lead”, but we will see how much more I can improve after reading this book.

• Started reading Ready, Fire, Aim by Michael Masterson

Like I said, I’m only a quarter of the way through this book, but it’s already changed my thinking.

Looking forward

As you may know, the cycle I’ll be doing after this one will by the Fighter Cycle — training Muay Thai in Thailand for over a month. Well, I just paid the Muay Thai school that I’ll be going to. So, this next week everything should be set up for me to go!
